Islam appointed editor
Professor Shafiqul Islam has been appointed to the editorial board of Water Resources Research (WRR) for 2021-2025 term. The interdisciplinary journal publishes research articles and commentaries on hydrology, water resources, and the social sciences of water. The publication aims to advance a greater understanding of water’s role within the Earth’s system.
Islam is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a professor of water diplomacy at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. His work focuses on the availability, access, and allocation of water within the context of climate challenges, health, and diplomacy. His efforts seek interdisciplinary approaches to issues by blending science, engineering, policy, and politics.
He was recently elected fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Class of 2020 in recognition of his “exemplary contribution and intellectual leadership in hydrology leading to the creation of a new area —Water Diplomacy.” He has authored over 100 publications and four books on water diplomacy, and his research has been published in media outlets including BBC World Service, Voice of America, Boston Globe, and The Daily Star.
